If one word could encapsulate Darwin College, it would be community. From the moment new students arrive, Darwin bursts into life with Freshers Fortnight — two weeks of laughter, discovery, and connection. From BBQs on the island to punting lessons on the Cam, ceilidhs that fill the hall with music, stargazing trips under clear skies, and historical tours led by the Dean, the fortnight is a whirlwind introduction to the joy of postgraduate life. And, of course, no Darwin welcome would be complete without that first visit to DarBar — a rite of passage and a cherished tradition.
Yet the magic of Darwin doesn’t fade after those first two weeks. It lingers in the warmth of shared evenings and the rhythm of college life: Oktoberfest steins clinking, BOPs pulsing with energy, GayDars and Sapphic Sips celebrating inclusivity, and the quieter moments of Drink and Draw or Wine and Cheese Society nights that offer respite amid demanding degrees. As the year draws to a close, we reflect on the memories made and the transitions ahead. This year marks the end of Master Dr Mike Rands’s tenure and the beginning of Professor Nigel Peake’s — a moment of renewal that mirrors the journeys of those graduating and moving on to new chapters. Whether your time at Darwin was one year or four, may the friendships forged here continue to support you wherever life leads. Because at Darwin, community isn’t just how we begin — it’s what stays with us. Darwin is not just a place to study, but a place to belong.
